About the project

Practical learning, openly shared.

MSAR.au brings together explanations, practice activities and official references for people learning the skills behind marine rescue.

Who maintains it?

Colin Dixon is an IT consultant, retired physics and mathematics teacher, and volunteer coxswain based in Mallacoota, Victoria. This project combines teaching experience with practical marine interests.

The aim is to help learners understand the reasoning behind a task and arrive at training with better questions. Volunteers from any organisation and recreational boaters are welcome.

Independence and scope

MSAR.au is Colin’s independent educational project. It is not a national rescue body, registered training organisation, dispatch service or certification authority. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by AMSA or any state marine rescue organisation.

Formal training, competency assessment, vessel induction and permission to undertake operational duties remain with the appropriate training provider, assessor and vessel operator. Follow your organisation’s procedures and the relevant legal requirements.

How content is reviewed

Lessons cite their main references and distinguish practice from assessment. New scenario sets remain labelled as drafts until their content has been checked by an appropriate reviewer. Source checks confirm the reference used; they do not certify a learner or approve a lesson as an accredited course.

Corrections are welcome. Please send the page address, the point in question and a supporting source. When a rule or operational assumption is disputed, we will check it against the primary reference before revising the exercise.

Privacy and local storage

No account is required. The site has no membership database, contact form, advertising or analytics script. Theme preference and some quiz practice results are stored in your browser, where storage is available. They are not submitted to MSAR.au.

The hosting provider may process normal request information when serving the site. Email feedback is sent through your email application to Colin. External reference links take you to sites with their own privacy policies.
